What Stage Are You In Spiritually? Understanding Your Growth with Dutch Sheets

A young woman reflects on spiritual maturity in nature, embodying authority in ministry.

Understanding Our Spiritual Stages

In his recent teaching, Dutch Sheets prompts us to consider a profound question regarding personal spiritual development: "What stage are you in?" This inquiry goes beyond mere self-reflection; it delves into the unique stages of spiritual growth that mirror our physical development as children. As we explore these stages, it becomes clear that understanding where we stand can profoundly influence the responsibilities and authority entrusted to us within our spiritual journey.

In "What Stage Are You In? | Give Him 15: Daily Prayer with Dutch | October 27, 2025," Dutch Sheets explores spiritual growth stages, shedding light on their significance in our faith journey.

The Stages of Spiritual Growth: More Than Just Age

Sheets references several Greek terms that define the stages of childhood—napios, pideon, technon, and huios. Each of these terms signifies a particular age or maturity level, comparable to the various phases we experience in our walk with Christ. Just as a toddler requires different care compared to a teenager, our spiritual nurturing must adapt to our level of maturity. This teaching is particularly relevant for those feeling called to leadership or ministry, as recognizing our spiritual stage can help clarify the responsibilities we should undertake.

Why Maturity Matters in Spiritual Leadership

Among the most important lessons from Sheets' discourse is that spiritual authority cannot be prematurely given. For instance, while young children can begin to take on simple responsibilities, spiritual infants are not yet ready for leadership roles. As spiritual adolescence comes with a burgeoning desire for independence, we often see a parallel in those who are spiritually immature attempting to exercise authority. This comparison raises the question: are we allowing the proper time and guidance for spiritual growth before expecting leadership?

The Importance of Recognizing Spiritual Gifts

As we exit the youthful phases, we enter the stage of technon, where spiritual gifts start to manifest. This period is exciting but fraught with the danger of overstepping boundaries without the necessary wisdom. Leadership in Christian contexts often emphasizes recognizing and nurturing these gifts while ensuring they are exercised under proper authority. Sheets emphasizes that while all children of God possess rights and blessings, it is the mature ones who can fully represent God and His authority to the world.

The Goal: Sunship and Its Authority

Ultimately, the aim of spiritual development should be to reach the huios stage—a state of maturity marked by responsibility and authority. This development involves a public recognition, akin to a ceremony, where a believer assumes their place within the family of God, entrusted with substantial responsibilities. As Dutch Sheets notes, God's plan is for believers to mature from being spiritual infants to becoming ambassadors of His kingdom on earth, who can lead nations towards healing and restoration.

Call to Action: Step Into Your Spiritual Authority

The challenge posed by Sheets is clear: it is time for the adult church—the spiritually matured—to rise and fulfill their calling. As spirit-filled believers, we must actively seek to grow beyond our initial stages and recognize the gifts God has bestowed upon us. By doing so, we can step into our divine roles and impact the world for God's glory.

If you find yourself contemplating what stage you are in spiritually, take the time this week for reflection, prayer, and seeking guidance. Awareness of your growth is the first step towards embracing your God-given authority.
